From the entrance doorway into the primary living zone, maintain a continuous 36-inch minimum path. Do not place tall credenzas within 3 feet of the door swing.
The Conversation Orbit (18")
The optimal distance between the front edge of a sofa and the edge of a coffee table is exactly 18 inches. Closer causes pinched knees; further breaks easy drink reach.
The Daylight Axis (30"+)
Never butt high-back sofas flush against full-height windows. Keeping a 30-inch perimeter walkway allows sunlight to spill deep across the room and reveals baseboard trim.
